A perfect night for baseball on the A diamond with the Red Hot Peppers taking on the Reds


Charlie Freer led off with a single and a stolen base for the visiting Peppers. Dave Reed followed with a walk. After a wild pitch and a fielder's choice both scored to get the Peppers going. The Reds quickly responded with a triple by Paul Miles, who scored on a single by Jim Jaz who stole second and advanced on a 1-3 then scored on a double by Joe Parker to tie the score at 2 after the 1st.

In the second Tony Mogavero led off and reached on an error. Vinny Koster followed with a single and Anthony Torre singled to plate Mogavero and the Peppers took the lead again. Jeff Whitehead then made quick work of the Reds in the bottom half of the inning with a 1-2-3 inning.

In the 3rd Jonnie Martin responded by setting down the 2nd, 3rd, and clean up hitter with a 1-2-3 inning of his own. Whitehead gave up a leadoff single to Ed Draves who promptly stole second. But the Peppers were able work around that keeping the Reds off the board.

Frank Kerbian led off the fourth facing Doug Hall with a hit to left down the line that Paul Miles was able cut off holding what appeared to be a double to a single. An errant pickoff attempt quickly put the runner on 3rd with no outs. With 1 out Tony Mogavero hit into a fielders choice plating a run and extending the Peppers lead to 4-2. Paul Peters led off the fourth for the Reds facing Vinny Koster with a single and stolen base. A single by Jack Griffin plated Peters to cut the Peppers lead to 4-3.

In the 5th, for the fourth time in 5 innings, the Peppers put their leadoff hitter on with a single by Jimmy Kidd. He was followed with singles by Dave Plew, a fielders choice by Freer, and singles by Reed and Whitehead that plated Kidd and Freer extending the lead to 6-3. The Reds mounted a comeback with a leadoff single by Rick Knipper and Doug Hall. Knipper stole third and scored when Ed Draves hit into a fielders choice. Jonnie Martin and Paul Miles followed with back to back singles loading the bases. Koster was then able to get a big K to end the inning and the threat with a 6-4 lead.

In the sixth Fred Muller singled and eventually scored. Dave Plew pitched the sixth for the Peppers and gave up a single to Jack Griffin and a free pass to Chris Abrams but was able to get out of the inning without yielding a run and a 7-4 lead.

Anthony Torre led off the 7th with a single. A couple of walks and a sac fly by Whitehead plated Torre and pushed the lead to 8-4. The fifth time in seven innings the Peppers got the leadoff runner and who eventual scored. Plew was able to get a line out to third sandwiched by a couple of ground balls to secure the win for the Red Hot Peppers.

Peppers 10 hits (8 different batters) 8 runs 5 walks 5 stolen bases.
