Whiz v Yankees


The Whiz and Yankees met yesterday for a night game at the A Diamond. Top of the 1st, the Whiz got things going. Shawn Martin led off with a single. Martin stole second base and Paul Graziano laid down a sacrifice bunt, moving Martin to 3rd. Jim Hicks hit an RBI single followed by Doug Reisinger with a single. Yankees pitcher Lex Herrlett was able to get out of the jam though, striking out the next batter and inducing a pop out to end the inning. Yankees threatened in the bottom of the 1st. With 1 out, Bob Altobelli reached on a single, the next batter hit into a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat. The Whiz went down 1, 2, 3 in the 2nd inning. Bottom of the 2nd had Darrell Duncan lead off the inning with a double. The next batter grounded out and the runner moved to 3rd. The following batter grounded out and the runner at 3rd attempted to score and was thrown out at home for the 3rd out. Top of the 3rd had the Whiz threaten. Martin led off with a single, but was out on fielder choice. Hicks hit a single to give the Whiz runners on 2nd & 3rd. The next batter hit a fielder choice followed by a flyout to the next batter to end the threat. The Yankees went down 1, 2, 3 in the bottom of the 3rd. Both the Whiz and Yankees went down 1, 2, 3 in the 4th inning as well. Top of the 5th saw Jan Friedman lead off the inning with a double. Martin had an RBI single. The next batter reached on an error followed by a walk. Reisinger had an RBI single followed by a single from Gene Hallenbeck. The next batter hit into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. Bottom of the 5th had the Yankees bounce right back. Altobelli hit a bomb off of the right field fence for a lead off double. Jack Griffin was beaned, giving the Yankees runners on 1st & 2nd with no outs. The next batter hit back to the pitcher who made the throw to 3rd for the 1st out. Dave Leonard hit a gapper to left center for a double and 2 RBI The next 2 batters grounded out to end the inning. 3-2 Whiz after 5. Top of the 6th had Pete Geannelis lead off with a single followed by a walk to Greg Mangione. Jan Friedman laid down a sac bunt making it safely to 1st and load the bases. Bob Bolt hit a fielderīs choice that scored a run. The next batter grounded out to the pitcher that resulted in another run. Paul Graziano hit an RBI single to score the final run of the inning for the Whiz. 6-2 Whiz going into the bottom of the 5th. With 2 outs Kevin Higgins and Chad Bowman hit consecutive singles. The next batter grounded out to end the threat. Top of the 7th had the Whiz tack on another run. Reisinger reached base on a single and stole 2nd. Hallenbeck hit a RBI single. The next batter flew out to center, followed by a strikeout. Mangione hit a single to give the Whiz runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs. The next batter flew out to left to end the threat. Bottom of the 7th for the Yankees had the first two batters get out on infield ground outs. The next batter reached on an error followed by Leonard hitting a single giving the Yankees runners on 1st & 3rd. The next batter grounded out to end the game. Pitching for the Whiz was Mike Kane who gave up 7 hits, 1 HBP. For the Yankees Altobelli and Leonard were both 2-3 with a double each. Duncan added a double as well Herrlett pitched for the Yankees. He gave up 14 hits, with 4 K, 1 HBP and 2 BB. For the Whiz, Martin and Reisinger were 3-4, Hicks was 2-3 and Jan Friedman had a double. Final score was Whiz 7 - Yankees 2.
