The Twins and Whiz met last night at the C Diamond for their second game of the season. The Twins jumped all over starting pitcher Joe Burns in the top of the 1st. After getting the lead off batter out, the next 3 batters hit singles. Steve Rychik, Jeff Whitehead and Gary Webber (RBI) all singled, followed by Stefan Koutsakis (2 RBI) with a double that led to 3 runs scored. The next batter grounded out with Koutsakis moving to 3rd. The next batter reached base on an infield error and the runner on 3rd scored. After a walk to the next batter, Burns was able to get out of the inning with a pop out to second. Bottom of the 1st had the Whiz bounce back, a little. Jeff Friedman led off with a single. With 1 out, Jim Hicks had a single, giving the Whiz runners on 1st & 2nd. With 2 outs Gene Hallenbeck walked to load the bases. The next batter hit a grounder to the infield where they attempted to get the runner at 3rd which resulted in an error and allowed 2 runs to score and left runners on 1st & 2nd with 2 outs. The Twins pitcher, Gary Webber was able to get out of the inning with a ground out. Top of the 2nd had the Twins threaten. Jeff Cohen led off with a single followed by an infield error giving the Twins runners on 1st & 2nd. Burns was able to get the next 2 batters on fly outs. With 2 out Webber hit a single to centerfield. The runner from 2nd base attempted to score on the play and was thrown out at home for the 3rd out. Bottom of the 2nd had Ron McCarthy hit a lead off double, but he was left stranded as Webber got the next to ground back to the pitcher for the out and moving the runner to 3rd. The next batter hit a grounder to 3rd, who made the throw home when the base runner attempted to score, for the second out. The next batter grounded out to end the inning. Top of the 3rd had Koutsakis lead off with a single. Burns was able to get the next 3 batters to end the inning. The bottom of the 3rd and top of the 4th was uneventful for either team. Bottom of the 4th had Mike Kane reach on an infield error, followed by walks to Hallenbeck and Barry Friedman to load the bases. The next batter popped out, followed by a fielder choice to score a run for the Whiz. With runners on 2nd & 3rd, Webber was able to strike out the next batter to end the rally. 4-3 Twins after 4 innings. Top of the 5th had Rychik reach base on a lead off single. Burns was able to get the next 3 batters to end the inning. Bottom of the 5th with 1 out, Burns hit a single, followed by an RBI double from Doug Reisinger. Jeff Friedman followed that with an RBI double of his own. Webber got the next to outs to end the threat. 5-4 Whiz after 5 innings. Top of the 6th had Bob Bolt come in for relief. Terry McCarthy led off the inning with a walk followed by a single from Mark Wright. Bolt struck out the next batter and got a pop out for the 2nd out. Just when it looked like Bolt would get out of the inning unscathed, Cohen hit a single to score the tying run. Bolt got the final out on a ground out. Bottom of the 6th with 2 outs had Barry Friedman hit a single. Friedman stole second. The next batter hit a fly ball that just cleared the infield and the runner on 2nd was waved home and was thrown out at the plate for the final out. Bolt got the Twins out 1,2,3 in the top of the 7th. Bottom of the 7th, with 2 outs had Pete Geannelis and Burns reach on singles. Webber got the final out on a pop out to center. Bolt got the Twins 1,2,3 in the top of the 8th. Bottom of the 8th had Jeff Friedman and Paul Graziano reach on consecutive walks. The next batter hit a fielder choice where the play was attempted at 3rd, but the runner was safe. Bases loaded with no outs, the infield was in, Mike Kane hit a grounder between short and 3rd for the walk off game winner. Burns and Bolt combined to give up 10 hits, with 3 BB and 3 K. For the Twins Koutsakis was 2-4 with a double. Rychik and Webber were 2-4 as well. Cohen was 2-3. Webber pitched a complete game for the Twins. He gave up 11 hits with 5 BB and 2 K. For the Whiz Jeff Friedman was 2-3 with a double, Burns was 2-3, McCarthy and Reisinger both had a double. Final score 6-5 for the Whiz.
