The Twins and Americans met Tuesday night at Central Park A-Diamond playing out their final Round Robin regular games. On the mound for the Twins, Garry Webber, for the Americans, Barry Jackson.
In the 1st inning, Jackson retired the Twin 1-2-3. In the bottom half, leadoff hitter Mark Finelli roped a single into LF. The #2 hitter hit into a 4-3 ground out advancing Finelli to second base. Vince Koster then hit a soft liner that dropped front of the SS, however a Finelli interference with the SS prevented a play, runner was called out and Koster was safe on 1st base. Koster then stole second base and scored on a Barry Jackson single. Webber the struck out the #5 hitter.
In the 2nd inning the Twins threatened with a walk to Saidenberg, followed by two 6-4 FC, a hit by Terry McCarthy, a couple of stolen bases, and the Twins had runners on second and third. Jackson then go the Twins 8 hitter to fly out to CF to end the threat. Webber retired the Americans 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the inning. Score 1-0 Americans after 2 innings.
The Twins broke through in the top of the 3rd inning. After a leadoff F8, John Reel reached first on an E5. Frank Owens followed with a single putting runners on first and second. Jeff Whitehead then doubled to LF scoring Reel. Michael Arbour then stroked a 2-RBI single to RF scoring Owens and Whitehead. Garry Webber then doubled to deep LCF scoring Arbour. Mark Wight followed with a single, putting runners on the corners. Wight then stole second base. Jackson was able to get the Twins 7 hitter to bounce into a 4-3 out to end the Twins inning. In the bottom of the third, Webber retired the Americans, registering two strikeouts around an error. Twins led 4-1 after 3 innings.
The Twins added 2 more runs in the 4th inning. Joe Hauser opened with a single. Stefan Koutsakis hit into a 6-4 FC. Koutsakis then stole second and third bases and scored on a dropped third strike throw to first on the Twins 10 hitter. An E1 throwing error put Owens on first. Owens stole second and scored on a Whitehead hit to CF. Jackson got the #3 hitter to pop out to the SS to end the Twins scoring. The Americans responded in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Ed Potash led off with a line drive single to CF. After Webber retired the next two batters, Jackson then delivered his second hit of the night putting runners on first and second. An E5 throwing error on a Dave Reed grounder plated Potash. Webber then retired the next batter on a 1-3 comebacker.
Neither team produced any hits or runs in the 5th inning. Both pitchers retired the sides quietly. Twins led 6-2 after 5 innings of play.
In the 6th inning, the Twins broke the game open, scoring 7 runs on 6 consecutive singles by McCarthy, Hauser, Koutsakis, Reel, Owens, Whitehead, an E6, a SacFly by Saidenberg and an RBI double by Mark Wight to LF corner. In the bottom of the 6th, after Webber recorded the first two outs, Ed Potash walked. Dave Plew was HBP on a non-curving curveball, putting runners on first and second. The next batter then grounded out 3U for the final out. Game over.
