In a game that meant a lot to the Cubs and very little to the Yankees, the Cubs beat the Yankees 10-5, Tuesday night. With the win, the Cubs are locked in to the number 1 seed for the 55+ Playoffs. With 1 game left and a 1 game lead over the Whiz Kids, and holding the tie breaker vs the Whiz, the Cubs locked up the top seed throughout the playoffs. The Yankees need just one win in their final two games to hang on to the number 3 seed, while the Cubs and Whiz have a meaningless game vs each other next Monday night to close out the regular season.
The Cubs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the 2nd. Ron Lochner, Jerry Rosen, and Jim Bonaparte started off the inning with singles to load the bases, with nobody out. Matt Miles drove in the first run with a fielder's choice. PJ Martone then singled home Rosen with the second run. One out later, Paul Miles capped off the rally with a fielder's choice, bringing home Bonaparte with the 3rd run.
The Yanks answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, when Paul Post doubled to lead off the inning and Dave Smitherman singled him home to cut the lead to 3-1. They would inch closer in the 3rd, getting a run on singles by Lex Herlett, Carlos Llera, and Jack Griffin. Cubs 3 - Yankees 2, at the end of 3.
The Cubs took advantage of two Yankees' errors in the top of the 4th, plating 2 runs. Sherwin So had a RBI single and John Coulombe drove in the second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly. Cubs 5 - Yankees 2, through 4.
The game reached the top of the 7th with the Cubs still up just 3. The Cubs were desperately looking for some insurance runs, with the potent Yankees attack getting last licks in the bottom of the 7th. Ron Massaroni got the ball rolling with a one out single. Paul Miles then doubled Massaroni to third. Carlos Espada came through with a RBI single, followed by Bryce Cutler's two RBI single. Chris Dunn blooped a double down the left field line, scoring Cutler. Mike Girard then followed with a RBI single and that suddenly the 5-2 lead was now a 10-2 lead.
Good thing that the Cubs got their insurance runs when they did because the Yanks were not laying down. Kevin Higgins, Herlett, Tony Parella, Griffin, and Post all singled to cut the lead to 10-5 with the bases loaded and still just one out. The Cubs got the bullpen up and the air was thick with tension. That is when Chris Dunn got Dave Smitherman on a comebacker that he turned into a 1-2-3 double play and the game was over.
Both teams had 15 hits each, with the Cubs getting 7 hits in the 7th, and the Yankees getting 6. It was a wild finish between two of the favorites to be playing in the finals come late September. Lex Herlett and Carlos Llera led the Yankees offense with 3 hits each. Jack Griffin, Paul Post, and Higgins all pitched in with two hits each. Mike Girard led the Cubs' offense with 3 hits, while Chris Dunn and Jerry Rosen had two hits each.
The upcoming playoffs will kick off for the Cubs on Thursday, 09/11/25 when they play a best 2 out of 3 semi-final series against an opponent to be determined.
