55 Twins-Cubs Semi-Finals Opener

Watervliet High School. Perfect baseball weather. The Cubs, helped by two walks, three singles, and some soft Twins defense used a five run first inning to defeat the Twins 9-3. The Twins recorded 7 hits in the game led by Jeff Whitehead who went 3-3 including 2 doubles and Stefan Koutsakis who was 2-3. Sherwin So had a double for the Cubs. The Twins made the only error in the game. Carlos Espada and Sherwin So played spectacular defense at short and 2nd respectively to take away several base hits from the Twins. Mike Girard went the distance for the Cubs surrendering 7 hits, striking out 3 while walking 2 and hitting a batter. Gary Webber pitched for the Twins on 1 days rest after defeating the Dodgers Monday evening. Webber allowed 6 hits, struck out 2 and was charged with 7 walks. The base umpire had mobility issues and did not move from his chosen full time position in the middle of the infield to be in good position on several very close plays. An umpire must be able to be in correct position to make calls. Especially in playoff games. Thats why we pay to have 2 on the field. The teams will meet again on Monday at A Diamond for a 5 pm start.
