Game 1 The teams met for a night game at the A Diamond last Thursday night. Starting for the Yankees was Doug Duell, for the Whiz Bob Bolt. Bolt got through the top of the 1st inning 1, 2, 3. Bottom of the 1st had the Whiz tally 2 runs. With 2 outs Jim Hicks reached on a fielders choice and Doug Reisinger reached on a single. Both runners moved to 2nd & 3rd on a pass ball. Gene Hallenbeck followed with a 2 rbi triple. Top of the 2nd had the Yankees bounce right back. Darrell Duncan reach on an error followed by Jack Griffin with a single. With one out and runners on 2nd & 3rd, Dave Leonard hit a 2 rbi single. Bottom of the 2nd had the Whiz gather another run. Paul Graziano reach on a single. With 2 outs Jeff Friedman delivered an rbi single. Bolt was able to keep the Yankees at bay for the remainder of the game. Bottom of the 3rd had the Whiz tack on 5 more runs. Hicks and Reisinger reached on consecutive singles followed by an intentional walk to Hallenbeck to load the bases. With 1 out Graziano hit a grounder to the infield. The fielder made an errant throw to home and 2 runs scored. With 2 outs Paul Scutieri hit a 2 rbi single. That was followed by an infield error that scored the final run. Lex Herrlett came in for relief in the 4th inning. The Whiz scored 1 more run in the bottom of the sixth. Scutieri hit a single, but was out on a fielder choice by Jeff Friedman. Bolt reached base on an error that allowed Friedman to score. Duell and Herrlett combined to give up 9 hits with 4 K and 1 BB. Scutieri was 2 for 3, Reisinger 2 for 4. Bolt gave up 5 hits to 5 different batters with 2 K and 1 BB. Final score was Whiz 9 - Yankees 2.
Game 2 Was played Monday at Watervliet. Starting for the Whiz was Joe Burns, for the Yankees Dave Smitherman. Whiz threatened in the top of the 1st. With 2 outs, Jim Hicks reached on a single followed by a walk to Doug Reisinger. Smitherman got out of the jamb by getting the strikeout to end the threat. Bottom of the 1st had Lex Herrlett reach on a single followed by Bob Altobelli with a double. Tony Perella hit a sac fly to plate the 1st run. After a walk to Carlos Llera, Darrell Duncan had an rbi single to complete the Yankee scoring. Whiz and Yankees went down quietly in the 2nd. Bottom of the 3rd had the Yankees add 2 more runs. Herrlett and Altobelli (rbi) had consecutive singles to start the inning. Perella followed with an rbi double to complete the scoring. Bottom of the 4th had Dave Leonard reach on a walk, stole 2nd and moved to 3rd on a pass ball, then scored on a fielder choice. Bottom of the 5th had the Yankees score 5 more to end the game after 5 innings. Herrlett had a single followed by a walk to Altobelli and Llera. Following an outfield error, singles by Jack Griffin and Mark Marshall, Dave Leonard hit a double to invoke the mercy rule. Smitherman pitched a complete game giving up 2 singles to Hicks and Burns, with 3 K and 3 BB Burns gave up 14 hits, with 1 K and 4 BB. For the Yankees Herrlett was 3 for 3, Leonard and Altobelli (double) were 2 for 2. Duncan and Griffin were both 2 for 3.
Game 3 Was a night game at the A Diamond. Starting for the Whiz was Jeff Friedman, for the Yankees Doug Duell. Top of the 1st had Lex Herrlett lead off with a single followed by a walk to Altobelli and singles by Tony Perella and Carlos Llera along with a sac fly by Jack Griffin that tallied 3 runs. The Whiz bounced back with 2. Jeff Friedman led off with a single followed by a walk to Bob Bolt & Jim Hicks. Doug Reisinger hit a sac fly followed by a walk to Gene Hallenbeck. Barry Friedman had an rbi single to complete the Whiz scoring. Top of the 2nd had Paul Post reach on a out single, with Chad Bowman hitting an rbi triple. Yankees tacked on 2 more in the top of the 3rd. With 1 out Tony Perella walked followed by singles from Llera and Jack Griffin to complete the scoring. Whiz scored 1 run in the bottom of the 3rd on singles by Reisinger, Barry Friedman and Mike Kane. 6-3 after 3. Bob Bolt came on in relief in the 4th and was unscathed, along with the Whiz being shutdown in the 4th. Top of the 5th had Altobelli lead off with a walk followed by a single from Perella along with a fielder choice that scored the run. Bottom of the 5th had the Whiz add a run. Singles by Reisinger and Barry Friedman led to the Whiz run. Score after 5 was 7-4 and ended up being the final score of the game. Friedman and Bolt combined to give up 10 hits, with 4 K and 3 BB. For the Yankees Post and Perella were 2 for 2. Llera and Leonard were 2 for 3. Duell gave up 10 hits, with 6 K and 3 BB. Barry Friedman was 3 for 4. Reisinger was 2 for 3.
As always a competitive series that could have gone either way! Gene you have a solid and classy team every year. Things just happened to go our way this year , 1-9 you guys have hitters throughout and not an easy out anywhere. Jack made some outstanding plays at third base. That helped us keep control of the game otherwise who knows. I hope Doug is ok from the slide.
