Fort Orange Mohawks 14 Chicago Blues 7

The Mohawks improved to 3-1 in pool play on Tuesday, winning its second game of a double header 14-7. The Mohawks set the tone early, scoring three runs in the first inning with a leadoff walk to Jim Jasiewicz, an RBI double from Ray Colletta, another walk to Jim Bradley, and a two-RBI single by Jeff Whitehead. They continued their momentum in the second, adding two more runs as Mike Arbour and Fred Muller led off with singles and scored on a single by Jasiewicz and a sacrifice fly from Colletta. After the Chicago Blues rallied for four runs in the third to narrow the gap to 5-4, the Mohawks responded in the bottom half: Jeff Whitehead, after a leadoff walk, scored on Youri Alkalays RBI single. The score held at 6-4 until the fifth, when the Mohawks tacked on three more runs with singles from Colletta, Bradley, Whitehead, and Dave Reed. Despite giving up two unearned runs in the sixth, the Mohawks answered with three more runs in the bottom of the inning, thanks to hits from Don Ball, John Weber, and Colletta, making it 9-6 after six innings. The Blues added an unearned run in the eighth, but the Mohawks sealed the win with two more runs in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by a leadoff walk to Charlie Freer, a single from Jim Tesoriero, and a two-RBI double by John Weber. Mohawk pitching was solid throughout. Starter Clem Alvear earned the win, allowing six runs (three earned) over six innings, scattering six hits and two walks while recording a strikeout. Jim Tesoriero closed out the time-shortened eight-inning game, surrendering just one unearned run on two hits and striking out two over two innings.
