After 4 days (5 games) of Pool Play, the Mohawks finished with 3 wins and 2 losses, and 53 runs allowed. This placed the Mohawks as the 12th seed out of 38 teams, qualifying us as the 12th seed in the 16-team AAA Bracket. As fate would have it, the Mohawks were paired up against the 5th seed Maine Black Bears with CDMSBL members Rick Caruso and Jack Griffin.
In the top of the 1st the Mohawks looks like they would mount a threat right away. After a leadoff out, Team-MVP Ray Coletta doubled to CF. Jim Bradley then hit a solid fly ball to CF that the Center Fielder backed up on and then made a laser throw to 3B getting Coletta trying to tag and advance. The bottom of the 1st Alvear retired the Bears 1-2-3.
The Mohawks would eventually strike first in the T2nd inning, scoring 3 runs on 1H (Jim Jasiewicz), 1W and 2 errors, but were unable to hold the lead as the Bears countered with 5 runs on 2H, 4BB, 1E in the bottom of the 2nd for a 5-3 lead. Neither team scored in the 3rd inning.
In the T4th the Mohawks pushed across 1 run on 3 hits (Pat Alston, Mike Arbour, Jim Jasiewicz) and error to cut the deficit to 1 run, 5-4. However, the Bears would add another run in the bottom of the 4th to extend the lead to 6-4 after 4 innings.
In the T5th the Mohawks added 2 more runs on 3H (Jim Bradley, Greg Gougler 2B, Pat Alston) including a LF error to tie the game at 6-6 after 5-innings (Bears were held scoreless).
In the T6th, the Mohawks finally regained the lead, scoring 2R on 4H (Fred Muller, Stefan Koutsakis, Ray Coletta, Jim Bradley), putting the Mohawks up 8-6. However, that lead did not last long as the Bears countered with 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th on 3 hits. After a leadoff single, out, a Jack Griffin single, strikeout and an E1 throwing error to 1B, the bases were loaded with 2 outs. On a 2-2 pitch Rick Caruso hit a shot over the Mohawks Right Fielders head for a long double plating all 3 bases runners to give the Bears a 9-8 lead, in what would be the turning point of the game as the Mohawks failed to score the remainder of the game . The Bears would tack on 2 more runs in the 7th inning and 6 runs in the 8th inning to extend the lead to 17-8. In the 9th inning, the Mohawks attempted one more rally as Jim Bradley collected his 3rd hit of the game and Pat Alston pounded out his 4th hit of the game, however both were left stranded. Final score Bears 17, Mohawks 8.
The Mohawks finished the 2025 Hobbs Tournament with a 3-3 record in our Inaugural Year!
Congrats to CDMSBL members Rick Caruso and Jack Griffin as their Maine Black Bears team won 2025 AAA Division Championship.
