Johnny Martin, with the death of his dad fresh on his mind, tossed a gutty complete game to beat the Giants 4-3 Monday night at Bob Moore field in Scotia. Leading 4-1 entering the 7th, the Giants pushed across two runs and had the bases loaded when Martin got hard-hitting Jimmy Keegan on a pop up to ss to end the game. The Giants had not committed an error in their first three games, but committed five, including a key error in the Cubs 3-run 5th when they took a 3-1 lead. Two errors in the 6th gave the Cubs what turned out to be the winning run.
Billy Smith and Mike Kravitz had two hits each to lead the Giants 9-hit effort. The Cubs managed just five singles off Jerry Solomon, Dave Hartman and Matt Cater.
Martin struck out three and walked just one as the Cubs improved to 4-1. The Giants fell to 3-1. jimk
