Whiz v Dodgers


Whiz and Dodgers met last night at the New Scotland field for both teams first game of the season. Starting pitchers were Mike Kane for the Whiz and Dennis Lane for the Dodgers. Dodgers threatened in the top of the 1st. With 2 outs Ray Coletta hit a double which was followed by a walk to Pat Alston. Kane was able to struck out the next batter to get out of the jam. Bottom of the 1st had the Whiz get a lead off walk to Adam Ellenbogen, with 2 outs Gene Hallenbeck walked. Lane got out of the inning with an infield fly for the 3rd out. Dodgers broke the ice in the top of the 2nd. Again with 2 outs, Greg Gougler hit a double followed by singles from Thomas Bain and John Weber to score a run. Top of the 3rd had the Dodgers tack on another run. This time with 1 out, Harold Staulters hit a single, an infield error had runners on 2nd and 3rd. The next batter hit a fielders choice where Staulters was out at home. With 2 outs, Alston had an RBI single to score the Dodgers 2nd run. Kane got out of the inning with a grounder back to the pitcher for the 3rd out. Both teams were quiet in the 4th and the 5th inning. The Whiz got their 1st hit of the game in the 4th on a single by Doug Reisinger. Bottom of the 6th had the Whiz finally wake up. Jan Friedman led off the inning with a double, an infield error to the next batter had runners on 1st and 2nd. Ellenbogen laid down a sac bunt moving the runners to 2nd and 3rd. An infielder error led to the Whiz scoring two runs. Reisinger tallied his 2nd hit of the game, then proceeded to steal 2nd giving the Whiz runners on 2nd & 3rd. Hallenbeck hit a double to tally the 2 runs. Joe Burns walked for runners on 1st & 2nd. Greg Mangione had an RBI single followed by an RBI single from Jim Macarelli. Jan Friedman hit a single. The next batter grounded back to the pitcher for the 3rd out. After 6 innings the score was Whiz 6 - Dodgers 2 and ended up being the final score. Kane pitched a complete game tallying 6 K, 1 BB, 7 hits. Lane and Rick Knipper combined to tally 5 K, 3 BB, giving up 7 hits. For the Whiz, Jan Friedman was 2-3 with a double. Reisinger was 2-3 as well. For the Dodgers Coletta and Gougler had a double each.
