65 ARACHNIDS-YANKEES-YOU JUST NEVER KNOW

The Arachnids and Yankees met for the first time this season at A Diamond last night. The game got started a little after 8 PM.John Weber started for the Yankees and put the spiders down 1-2-3 in the top of the 1st on 3 infield grounders. The Yankees touched up Arachnids starter TJ Scorsone for five hits and three runs in the bottom of the inning.TJ was not a happy man. Top of the second and the Arachnids again went down 1-2-3 on two infield grounders and a fly to centerfield. Bottom of the second, John Cortese leads off and grounds out 4-3. Paul Cerone follows with a double but Scorsone settles down striking out the next batter and getting the third out on a 6-3 grounder. Nothing good happening for the arachnids in the top of the third, but they do get there first base runner on a walk to Terry McCarthy but no runs. Weber has a no hitter through 3. Scorsone starts to find his groove and sets down the Yankees 1-2-3 in the bottom of the third which included an inning ending double play. Top of the 4th Weber strikes out the first hitter but Don Wixon works a 1 out walk. Lee Madsen grounds to short, forcing Wixon for the second out of the inning, but Madsen beats the throw at first and proceeds to steal 2nd with 2 outs. Darrell Duncan walks. TJ Scorsone singles driving in both speedy runners. It is now a 3 to 2 ball game, Yankees still on top. Rick Saidenberg lines out hard to right field to end the top of the fourth. Up come the Yankees in the bottom of the fourth and Ron Smaka leads off with a his second single of the game. However, Scorsone gets the next three batters on infield outs stranding Smaka at third. Top of the fifth for the Arachnids and Bob Bolt leads off flying out to centerfield. Pat Alston follows with a single. An infield single. The man has got a lot more speed than I realized. Alston steals second and eventually scores on a couple of infield errors. Tie ballgame 3-3. Bottom of the fifth Scorsone gives up a lead off single to Tony Nardacci who was thrown out at second, trying to stretch it into a double. Nice strong throw by Rick Saidenberg in right field. Ron Massaroni follows with a 1 out single and steals second base. However, Scorsone gets the next two batters 13 and 63 to end the inning. Top of the sixth, WEBER puts down the spiders 1-2-3. Bottom of the sixth, Scorsone puts down the Yankees 1-2-3. Top of the seventh 3-3 ball game. Lee Madsen leads off with a walk. Darrell Duncan follows with a walk. Runners first and second and Scorsone lays down a beautiful bunt up the first baseline, moving both runners into scoring position, one out. Cleanup hitter, Ricky Saidenberg is intentionally walked to load the bases. Bob Bolt follows with a single knocking in the go ahead run. Pat Alston follows with another single. Tom King comes through with another single. Is now a 7-4 ball game in favor of the arachnids. The third out comes on a 6-4 grounder. The Yankees never go down easy as Jerry Rosen leads off and reaches on an infield error. Ron Smaka follows with his third single. PJ Martone pops out to the shortstop in short left field. Kevin Carpenter singles knocking in Rosen. Jim McQuade grounds into a fielders choice forcing Carpenter at second for the second out. Tony Nardacci grounds into a fielders choice forcing McQuade at second and the ball game is over. Arachnids win 7-4. Leading the Yankees was Ron Smaka who went 3-3, Paul Post 2-3, and Kevin Carpenter 2-3. Pat Alston was leading hitter for the Arachnids going 2-3. Both pitchers threw a complete game with Scorsone picking up a gutsy win and WEBER taking a tough loss. Game ended at 9:50 pm.
