Fresh off a forgettable showing and narrow 5-3 win against the Americans two days prior, the Cubs gathered in their dugout (players only meeting) early before the game and collectively and enthusiastically vowed to come roaring back on this magnificent Thursday, this day of day prideful reclaim. This was going to be an epic about-face, legendary, mythical even............... (cue the sound of a turntable needle screeching across a Donnie & Marie record / a Yugo slamming on it brakes at high speed) .........1 hit over 6 innings! The lone hit coming in the Cubs final set of at-bats. Drats!!!
Americans pitcher Jeff Martin induced 15 groundballs (that's a lot) and deserved a much better fate than a 5-nil loss. Unfortunately, 6 errors in the first two innings sank the American battleship! Not-a-one earned run, zero zilch null nada! Martin (rewind to Tuesday) struck again by picking off another one of our guy's at first base. Warning to the other teams....dude's got a legit move to first!
Highlights:
Cubs - No major injuries! - Carlos Espada (Cubs Player of the Game) pitched 4 very effective innings giving up only 3 hits. Carlos also scored twice (one from second on a passed ball - speed kills) - Darrell Duncan picked up where Carlos left off, 3 innings of 1 hit ball
Americans - Jeff Martin pitched outstanding - could very well have been a 0-0 game! - Chris Canova, single/walk - Dave Reed, single/walk - Ed Potash, single/walk
