The Twins squared off against the Americans on a chilly & breezy Monday night (6/15) at Swift Road, game time temp 65 (felt cooler). On the mound for the visiting Twins was the crafty submarine (actually softball underhand) pitcher Wayne Nicholsen and for the Americans, Jeff Martin.
Frank Owens got the Twins started with a leadoff walk and a stolen base. Jeff Cohen immediately followed with an RBI single. Martin then got 2 of the next 3 batters out before things went sideways. In addition to 7 hits and an error, the Twins also squeezed in 5 walks in a 45-minute top of the first inning. The Twins tallied 12 runs, which is all they would score the entire game as relief pitcher Dan Durback held the Twins scoreless innings over the next 4 innings, only giving up 4 hits and 2 walks. For the Twins, Nicholsen worked his underhand magic once again, inducing 11 ground ball outs and surrendering only 1 run on 4 hits and 2 walks over the 5-inning game.
Play of the night came in the bottom of the second inning. With 2-outs, the Americans had a runner on third base. Dan Durback ripped a hard grounder down the third base line. Twins third baseman Steve Rychick playing in at the grass, dove to his right to snag Durbacks grounder and in one motion, while rolling over, also managed to tag the runner out. Not sure if intentional or by luck, however, nice job Dorn!
Twins 12-13-0 Americans 1-4-2
Leading the Twins offense: Jeff Cohen 2 -4 (double), Steve Rychick 2-3, Mark Wight 3-3, Alex Marin 2-3. For the Americans: Jeff Martin was 2 for 2 (2 hard hit singles).
