On a beautiful Friday evening in Saugerties, the Arachnids and Cardinals got together and played a really close game that went down to the final out. First off, Id be remiss not to mention the spectacular condition of the Saugerties Babe Ruth Field. The entire field (real grass) was in fabulous condition, well-groomed with a terrific mound and home plate area. For a town of approximately 19,000 people, the entire complex of numerous baseball & softball fields is outstanding. Kudos to Saugerties! Now for the game recap.

The visiting Arachnids wasted no time, scoring 1 run in the top of the first inning. Lee Madsen led off with a single, stole second and then advance to third on a 5-3 ground out. TJ Scorsone followed with an RBI single. The Cardinals did not score in their half of the first inning.

Top of the 2nd, Twins went quietly. The Cardinals scored a run to tie the game on an E-6, a stolen base and an RBI single by Al Freer. In the top of the 3rd, the Arachnids regained the lead on singles by Jim Edelman and Lee Madsen, an E-6 and an RBI single by TJ Scorsone and a 4-3 RBI groundout by Pat Alston. Darrell Duncan held the Cardinals scoreless in the bottom of the 3rd, keeping the score Arachnids 3, Cardinals 1.

In the top of the 4th inning, with one out, Jim Tino singled and stole second. Despite another run scoring threat, the Arachnids did not score. Stefan Koutsakis relieved Duncan in the 4th inning. Following a leadoff out, Gene Hallenbeck lifted a fly ball into shallow center for a single and then stole second base. Ron McCarthy followed with an RBI hit to CF that got by the centerfielder putting McCarthy on second. Koutsakis retired the next two batters keeping the score 3-2 in favor of the Arachnids.

In the 5th, the Arachnids responded with a very important run. Madsen led off with his 3rd single of the evening, and then promptly stole second base and third base. After Duncan lined out to the shortstop, Scorsone hit a 6-3 groundout scoring Madsen, Scorsones third RBI of the night, putting the Arachnids up 4-2. The Cardinals did not score in the bottom of the 5th inning despite two-out singles by Pete Zamory and Ed Potash.

While the Cardinals held the Arachnids scoreless in the 6th and 7th innings, the Cardinals offense was able to close the gap in the bottom of the 6th inning. Following a leadoff HBP (Martin), an unsuccessful 1-6 fielders choice attempt and a walk (Hallenbeck), the Cardinals had the bases loaded with the dangerous Ron McCarthy coming to the plate. McCarthy hit into a 6-4 FC plating Martin to make the score 4-3. The next batter worked a full count walk to load the bases again. The next batter then hit a line drive to second baseman Madsen who threw to first base in time to double up the runner to end the Cardinals rally. Scorsone came on to pitch a scoreless bottom of the 7th to earn the save. In all, a very well-played game by both teams.
