giants 14, peppers 3

kaboom!

not the skies for a change, but the giants' bats. actually, it was a pretty night at cba - a slight shower about 5:15, then blue skies, a little breeze, about 72 - and giants cracking the ball around the park. them balls traveled fast and far. according to our book, jim walters and pat alston led the parade with three hits each.

jimmy k's batters were backed by more than able pitching of dave (?) hartman, who threw no-hit ball through five innings, using a nice fastball that he worked in and out and a slow curve which also worked as a changeup.

for the peppers, mike bintz, fred gokey and tony skrabalak had hits. tony and fred - emergency players for us - also made two of our three defensive plays of the game. tony fired a nice one-hopper from mid-centerfield home that missed an incoming runner by millimeters and fred caught a hot one-hopper at second - so hot it broke the strings on his glove - the ball then popped in the air, he caught it barehanded and threw the runner out at first. in the first inning, mick mccallen made a sweet diving catch in right - despite running on bruised knees.

in the 7th, we all put on our rally caps. it worked. we scored a run. nearly had two.

the nice thing about looking at these scorebook pages? the next page is blank.
