Anyone out there in the 38+, lacking players Thurs.night? I need a bb fix. Going through withdrawls. Too many rain-outs. HELP ME!! Dan Maguire( aka Papabell)
I sympathize, Dan. However, it may be that you are too good a player to serve as a "borrowed player." Let me explain:
All opposing managers have the option of rejecting any borrowed players. That is, technically speaking, manager "A" must clear with manager "B" all players that he intends to borrow. You can't just show up for a big game with a couple of All-League players as your borrowed guys, for example.
Of course, this all depends upon the "importance" of the game.
I do think that the new playoff format will add meaning to a lot of games this season when in the past, well, it didn't really matter if you were seeded 8th or 6th or whatever. Now teams want to be in the top six -- I assume it's a common goal -- and issues like "borrowed players" might be looked at more closely than in the past.
My point: 1) Managers should seek clearance from opposing teams well before anyone arrives at the field; 2) Teams are well within their rights to reject a borrowed player on the grounds that his participation might effect the outcome of the game.
From my perspective, a borrowed player should certainly be a good player, but probably not an All-Star. Alas, there are many of us around.
If a quality player is replacing a quality player, then I don't have a problem with it. The Whiz Kids have 2 quality catchers who cannot make the game for acceptable reasons. The Whiz Kids, too, have exhausted all possibilities of borrowing a 47 player. Since all 47 teams play that day, including some games with the same starting times at different sites, none are available. The Marlins do have a bye, but I'm also told no Marlin catchers are available. Besides, would a team battling another team for a higher seed really want to help that team win a game, esp. in the posotions as catcher? I understand your point, but if there isn't anyone else out there, then we do what we have to do so the Whiz Kids aren't throwing someone back there who hasn't caught before. Also, if an opposing manager vetos the player, the commissioner has the right to override that veto if he feels it's necessary. Hey, I really don't want Maguire to play. Period. He's just coming off a broken toe. But he's a big boy now and can make his own decisions. I told him if he gets hurt, he has to face the Giants kangaroo court.
Dan, I coach the Highlanders and we have a game tonight (6PM, Friday, 7/21) at SUNY vs. the Reds. We could use a player if you are interested. Cos Di Bari: e-mail rosco49r@yahoo.com; work phone 474-6304
