briefly - now, there's a surprise isn't it? (dennis, pay attention) - it was a good game between the marlins and peppers at new scotland on friday, july 21. nice weather, not too humid, not too hot, grass was green and the marlins were, as always, sharp. we like to think - though the evidence may not have been visible to many at this game - that the peppers are, each game, getting sharper.
randy craft pitched sharply, throwing a five hitter - all singles -and striking out six. he painted the corners nicely. mike girard and dave mitchell both went 3-for-4 for the fish and ron (last name?) at third base had two long, fast-travelling doubles.
matt leinung pitched well for the peps - in the first, two errors with two runners on hurt him. we're a work in progress, and as manager i see things that others may not - a diving stop here, a decent relay there, a step more hustle than before - that weren't present in the early games. baseball time isn't real time. a little bit each game. (hopefully, enough will be visible before we all turn 90 and start worrying that we won't have sufficient time left to strut our stuff.)
meanwhile, can't leave here without admiring the cripness of the marlins' play - from the quick way they swing the bats - the "crack!" is almost always there - to their sharpness on defense. there are few wasted motions, few opportunitiies not seized. it's good ball.
