Perfect weather for an almost perfectly pitched game. The Pirates Steve Lounello pitched a no hitter tonight striking out 10, giving up no walks and perfection only marred by a couple of errors. The umpires stopped the game during the top of the 7th as the Pirates had scored 6 more runs and it became apparent the entire inning could not be concluded before darkness fell. Evidently pitchers can also hit, as Steve reached base 3 times with 2 hits and a walk. Rookie catcher Bob Coffey provided 2 hits and a walk, while Jim McQuade likewise chipped in with 2 hits. The Shaskeys deserve a lot of credit for never giving up, as they all played hard until the conclusion, and never got on one another during a difficult situation facing a great pitching effort.
way to go Steve! the depth of pitching talent this division holds has really surprised me. the top teams have creditable staffs that can deliver on any given night. This is the end will make for some interesting playoff series , especailly as we go to the three game scenario in the quaterfinals this season. Really you need a possible 4 starters or three and some strong relievers to get the job done. I see with the return of Steve to their staff the Pirates will have that extra starter. Steve welcome back, I know the last season you worked hard to return and it paid off. See you guys friday.
