The Sox started out quickly lacing four consecutive singles against Bucky Kruzinski after one out in the first and end up scoring 4 runs to start out the game. With Jim Dalton firing bullets and marshmallows (okay - more marshmallows than bullets), the A's were able to sneak back into the game in the second with 3 of their own.
The pitchers and defense settled down and that score held until the sixth when the A's were able to squeak out two more runs to take a 5-4 lead.
The gates opened up for the A's when they were able to score 4 runs in the top of the seventh to take what looked like a commanding 9-4 advantage. But the White Sox were not done.
With a runner on and one out, 5 well-placed singles plates 3 runs. The bases are loaded and it is now a 9-7 game. The stage is set for a great comeback. And Fred Phillips is coming to the plate!
With Kruzinski taken out of the game on a second trip to the mound, Art Gianakos comes in to try for the save. With a 1-0 count, Phillips finds a hanging slider and is all over it to deep right center. It was clobbered! John Haff, the centerfielder for the A's gets a great jump on the ball...and somehow runs it down at about 370' from the plate! The runners, thinking there is absolutely no way that ball will be caught are all on the move. In the confusion, runners cross and the second out is recorded - game over!
Both pitchers had great games. Haff had a divng catch in short center earlier in the game, three singles, 2 SB's and 2 runs scored to go along with his game-saving catch. Rick Caruso had 2 singles for the Sox.
