It's tough in any division to go unbeaten, so the Yanks were due in falling to the Hornets in a 47+ game Saturday evening at UAlbany.
Dave Madden went the distance in a gutsy effort and was aided by great Hornets defense and some timely hitting in improving to 6-1-1. The Yanks are now 6-1.
The play of the game occurred in the top of the 6th. With the Hornets nursing a 5-4 lead, Ken Zimmerman led off with a walk and Ed Schreiber reached on a dribbler up the first-base line. After a sacrifice moved the runners, Madden was told to pitch around Todd Baldwin. He made a mistake pitch and Baldwin hit was appeared would be a two-run double to the gap in left-center. But left-fielder Gary Sorvari, racing toward center, reached out and made a great catch to rob Baldwin and keep it to a sac fly that tied the score. Madden then got a ground out to end the inning.
That play lifted the Hornets, who rallied for 2 in the bottom of the 6th. With one out, Mike Lannon singled up the middle and stole second. Dick Stark walked. After the second out, Jack Perry, who went 3-4 in the game, roped his second double of the day to score both runners and give the Hornets the lead.
Sorvari had 2 hits and an RBI; Kevin Carpenter had two hits and an RBI; Lannon had 2 hits and scored a run and Perry also scored twice to lead the Hornets.
Wayne Newcomb had a two-run triple to help the Yanks get off to a 3-0 lead in the second. Schreiber and Paul Celentano each added two hits for the Yanks, who left 12 runners on base.
