Cougars notch first-ever win

The Columbia-Greene Cougars garnered their first win of this, their inaugural season by besting the Dodgers in a tight, well-played game by the score of 7-2.

This was a nail-biter, to be sure, with both teams displaying strong defensive efforts. With a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, the Cougars were finally able break it open, scoring four runs on an rbi single by Jim Turner, who was 3 for 3 on the day, and a three-run double by Jim Wing, who was two for three overall.

The curve-balling duo of Andy Andros and John Breen handled pitching duties for the Cats, repeatedly working out of trouble under the sagacious direction of catcher Brian Quinn. Dave Plew chipped in his second double in two games, and played an astounding game at shortstop, despite having his glasses broken by a bad-hop grounder.

John Reardon ptiched a good game in hard luck for the Dodgers, masterfully keeping Cougar hitters off-balance with a variety of agonizingly slow pitches. Don Ball was two for three with a double, and handled numerous chances at third base with calm assurance.

I'd like to thank my former teammates on the Dodgers, who exemplified the best in good sportsmanship by extending warm congratulations to me on my first win as a manager. They are a great bunch of guys and always play hard for their dedicated and capable manager, Ed Rogers.

I'd also like to thank the two men in blue (whose names, regrettably, are unknown to me), for handling our game on very short notice. They both did a fine job.

But most of all I'd like to thank my players, fourteen guys who have a burning desire to play baseball. They play like a team, generously and selflessly, and have maintained an admirable spirit throughout the run of tough games preceding this win. I'm proud to be associated with them.

Frank

Congratulations to you and your team Frank. I'm most happy for all of you. The sweet taste of victory is much easier to swallow than the bitter taste of defeat. Continue your progress and know that you have a solid base of players to compete in this league.
