The Shaskys won their second victory tonight in an exciting 8-5 game with the White Sox. It was a see-saw contest with the Sox going ahead 5-4 with a five run fourth inning, only to have the Shaskys take the lead back and keep it by plating 2 runs in the 5th and 2 runs in the 6th. The key moment in the game happened in the bottom of the 5th inning. The Sox, down by a run, looked like they were stoked for a comeback rally. A leadoff baserunner and then a stolen base had them with man on second and nobody out. At the plate Koster, with the runner going, ripped a frozen rope deep and down the line in left. Tony Melendez came streaking across to the line and laid all the way out and stole a double away from Koster with the grab. Then he somehow untangled himself from the ground and got up and threw to second for the double play, erasing the rally that had barely started. It was a great catch and certainly the best catch of the year that we have seen from either side in all of our Shasky games this year. Rich Cooney went all seven for The Shaskys on the hill, and worked his way out of some major jams. The second inning ended with a bang-bang play at the plate on an attempted steal of home plate. McCann was on third for the Sox, with two out. He got off on a great jump while Cooney got ready to pitch. He was 3/4ths of the way to home when Cooney saw him go and stepped off. He turned and nabbed McCann at the plate with a strike, catcher Chris Sanford blocking the plate, making the tag and holding on to the ball. The Shasky bats were led by Tim Burns who was two for two and a walk, hitting a double and scoring leading off the second, as well as a triple and scoring leading off the 6th inning. Tim Phelps also helped the Shasky cause with a long two-rbi double in the crucial 5th inning rally. Fleck and Cooney knocked in the insurance runs in the 6th inning. The Sox played a tough game, but the Shaskys had the day and returned the favor to the Sox, who had beaten the Shaskys 19-1 in their inaugural contest back in May.
