Cougars vs. Blue Thunder

On Sunday at New Scotland, the Cougars held on to edge a tough Blue Thunder team by the score of 6-4.

Cougar pitchers Frank Montagano, John Breen, and Dave Plew combined to allow no earned runs thanks in large part to crisp defensive play behind them. Breen and Andy Andros each had a single and a double to lead the Cougar attack.

Rich Garbarino tossed a fine complete game and smacked a mammoth double to right for the Thunder. Tim Brown turned in a solid game a shortstop, and Joe Nitsche in right made what has to be the best catch I've seen this year, a full-speed backhander going deep and toward the line, to rob Dave Plew of what was looking like his second extra-base hit of the day.

My thanks for a good game to Thunder manager Bob Lounsbury, who displays a superior level of dedication and sportsmanship every time he steps onto the field.

Special mention goes to Brian Quinn and Dave Smith of Cougars. After playing seven innings the day before (Quinn behind the plate and Smith at third), they both pushed themselves through another seven tough innings on Sunday despite having more injuries than I can count. Literally, there was not a good leg to stand on between them--and yet they refused to sit down and turned in play after play on the field. These guys have it.

Frank
Manager, Columbia-Greene Cougars

Clarification. I believe the double to right that you referenced was hit by Pete LaFlamme, the Thunder third baseman.

You are so right, Larry.

Sorry, Pete.

......and Joe (DiMaggio) Nitsche's catch going away toward the line was in left field...
