The Pirates beat the Peppers 4 to 2 in a game marked by fine pitching performances by both starters. Steve Lounello pitched a complete game victory for the Pirates, surviving a scare in the 7th in which the Peppers scored 2 runs and left the tying runs on 2nd and 3rd. Joe Sarubbi pitched a complete game in defeat, striking out 11 Pirates. Unfortunately for the Peppers, lead off walks came around to score 3 of the 4 runs for the Pirates.
I certainly agree with Ed's assessment of the pitching duel. I would like to add that there were a total of 21 strike outs in the game, with Joe Sarubbi notching 11 and Steve Lounello with 10. The hitters were kept off balance all night. Kudos to the umpires who called a great game.
