Would it be possible to have a section of our website devoted to our sponsors? Some teams have significant sponsors and they should be mentioned. Coupled with this, we should have some sort of directory of businesses that our members are associated with, or even run, in order to generate business within our own league.
This is one that is long overdue. The directory is something we all would benefit from. For instance: I am building a house this year and I would like to know if there is anyone in our league that I could patronize for an inground pool and/or fence construction. It is something both buyers and sellers could benefit from. It could even be a source of income for the league. We could charge a small "advertising fee" to list your business. I know that my appliance business would gladly pay for a spot on the website. I will volunteer to help with the gathering of information, but we need someone who can create the site to volunteer.
WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE THE HOME PAGE AND NEWS UPDATED, THE POST BY BT10 ASKING ABOUT THE 53 LEAGUE IS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF GUYS WANTING TO BE UPDATED. THE LAST NEWS WAS 10/27/05. YEAH OK.
Great idea guys. I, too, am going to do major renovations to my home in the next year, and I have no idea who to hire. Plus, I want to do much of the basic work myself.
But, we need someone who would be vigilant in updating the site. I can bring this to the board to see what they think. I'll kep you posted.
I couldnt agree more. Finding Contractors,Mechanics....etc can be a royal pain. it would be nice to go on the league website and see reliable people on a directory of services. I recently referred a lady buying appliances to Mike Girard because I remembered his email about how he works in that industry (She will be calling you Mike, her name is Gerry). Jim K, my nephew has an excellent sheetrock/additions business called All Pro Drywall and his phone number is 449-TAPE. He is very well known and does excellent work. If you call him tell him his Uncle Mario referred you to him.
This is all well and good, but ideally if we are going to have someone as a webmaster - who's job it is to maintain a site - he probably should get paid for his services.
Coming from the guy who was asked to start the 28+ site and run a team site in another league, it is extremely difficult to keep up with the happenings of the league and then to post them onto a website. Of course, I also have three young children at home....
Seriously though, it is tough and the guys who do it now do it on a completely volunteer basis. As a person who tried it before, I have some ideas on how to make it a great website but it takes dedication from at least one person from each team to do it. I had a great time doing what I could with the 28's (now the 27's) but the biggest problem was a serious lack of participation from a couple of teams and everything ended up looking sort of half-assed. A couple of teams spoiled it for the other eight or so teams in the league.
Excellent points, Rob. I believe it should be a (modestly) paid position. Kevin already has his hands full with the schedule, the scores, and standings. He can't do it alone.
The 28 website was very, very ambitious. There's a lesson in that; teams never fully participate, even when they are asked to nominate players for All-League.
Hopefully this site can make slow, steady progress. Creating a few simple, static pages -- like a list of HOFers and All-League winners -- would be a nice start. Mike's idea for a directory of services is also worthwhile, and once it's set up, there would be minimal upkeep. Like you, I once dreamed of all kinds of stats and whatnot, but I no longer think that's realistic. We have to take it one step at a time. As opposed to standing still, which is where we're at now.
This site represents our league. The CDMSBL is a great organization. I'd love to see our site be at least commensurate to the quality of the league as a whole. I think we're selling ourselves short.
I dont know too much about running a Website. But, having a list of Sponsors and a Directory of services wouldnt be a weekly thing. If teams wants continued sponsorship, usually the sponsor wants to see a little in return; like to at least be mentioned somewhere. In addition, having a directory of services would only help generate interest in our league. When businesses in the area hear I heard of you through CDMSBL it should generate small talk about what CDMSBL is. We have 2 sponsors this year and weve generated a receipt that has our team, division and league website so that they can follow us. Continued sponsorship has verbally been approved if they get something in return which is a reasonable request. Updating the general info on the website should take place once a month, and a deadline to have info to the webmaster should be set. Most sponsors will be set at the beginning of the season, so that shouldnt need frequent updating. The directory of goods and services shouldnt need frequent updates either.
