6/1 WhizKids 17, Veterans 8

When I drew the short straw to be the starting pitcher, I told the WhizKids to give me a lot of runs. After falling behind 1-0 after 1 inning, the 'Kids scored 4 in the 2nd, 6 in the 3rd, and 7 in the 4th enroute to a 17-8 victory over the Veterans. After I left with a 10-4 lead, Jesse Braverman pitched the next 3 innings, and Jim Preller finished up in the 7th. Two hits each by Jeff Teats, Ed Klopfer, Dave Palmer, Jim Porter, Ed Draves, and Jim Preller led the 13-hit attack. In making his WhizKids debut, Jim Preller also walked twice and scored 3 runs. Mike Hart had 3 hits for the Vets, and DeMavin, Smith, ageless Bill Kervan, and aging Tony Scanu chipped in with 2 hits apiece. Jim Porter-Manager-WhizKids

My Little League team lost last night, 14-1 -- misery -- and all I want to do is shoot myself in the face.

And I'm not even pro-gun.

So I guess those good feelings tend to evaporate pretty quickly.

On a different note, my thanks to the many guys who have genuinely taken pleasure in my recent small success. Despite the occasional (and perhaps inevitable) flare-ups and conflicts over baseball issues, the heart of this experience with CDMSBL far transcend wins and loses. It's been about the people I've met, the teammates I've played with, the friendships I've made that have carried outside the field. The good wishes and kind words mean a lot to me.
