Classic CDMSBL matchup as the Cubs beat the Blue Jays 3-2 in eight innings. Tom Sheperdson went the distance for the Cubs scattering 5 hits. Outstanding pitching matchup as Sheperdson battled Brian Maiello toe-to toe. Excellent pitching and defense in this smartly played affair by both clubs. Cubs threatened in the bottom of the seventh but Mike Maiello came in relief and retired two straight Cubs with the winning run on second. After Sheperdson pitched a scoreless top of the eighth Joe Fitgerald led off the bottom of the inning for the Cubs with a double and Shawn Maney followed with a single. After Tom Maney was walked to load the bases, Andy Holyle stepped up and drilled a line shot in the gap for the walk-off base-hit.
Big story to this game was the field conditions at New Scotland as Friday night the field was under water forcing the postponement of the Marlin-Highlander game. We showed up for a 10:00 game to an absolutely perfectly manicured and lined field in outstanding condition. Great job by Darrell Duncan and Mr. Kendall to get the field ready for us. These guys are tremendous! This field is a gem for our league and we are lucky to have it. As a note...our game was the only one scheduled there today and we could have easily had two more games there today on a beautiful, yet hot Saturday...something to think about for next year.
