Highlanders 7 - Cubs 6

In an exciting and quickly-played game Tuesday night at West Albany Field, the Highlanders edged the Cubs 7-6. Kevin Jackson was the winning pitcher, Joe Fitzgerald took the loss, and Don Dunham got the save. The game was filled with clutch hitting and smart at-bats, with the batters on each team willing to work a walk as well as swing away. The defense for both teams was solid and every player seemed to contribute something when their team needed it. With the Highlanders leading 2-0 after four innings, the Cubs tied the game in the top of the fifth. The Highlanders responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, which was countered with two by the Cubs in the top of the sixth. The Highlanders answered with another two runs in the bottom of the sixth for a three run lead and a little breathing room going to the seventh. The Cubs, in another display of resilience, showed that the Highlanders would need all of it. After Cubs batters worked two walks to start the inning, Don Dunham relieved Kevin Jackson. Two batters later the score stood at 7-6 and the Cubs had runners on second and third with no outs. The Highlanders were able to hold off the Cubs as the next two batters took their cuts, but struck out. The final out was made on a flyball to center that seemed to take forever to come down. Each team had their chances and the Highlanders were fortunate enough to come away with the win. It was great baseball and fun to be a part of it.
