In a crisp, fast-moving game on Tuesday at sunny New Scotland, the Gray Cougars shaded the Americans by the score of 6- 5.
The lovably crusty Rich Frank got the start and the win for the Cats. Despite having pitched only one inning so far this season, he was truly at the top of his game, yielding only two unearned runs on three hits through the first five innings.
Pitching for the Americans to a no-decision, Berny Rasowsky was also in fine form, managing to hold the Cougars to only two runs on seven base hits with five strikeouts through his first five frames.
Then, in the top of the sixth, the Americans broke through for three more runs to take a 5-2 lead. But the Felines answered in their half with four big runs on four hits and three walks. With one out, Rasowsky was replaced by Bill Kervan, who gave up what turned out to be the winning run.
Frank Montagano took over mound duties for the Cougars in the top of the seventh and picked up the save.
Americans' manager (and tireless 46s Commissioner) Tony Scanu had a double and a single. Thanks to Tony and his team for another really exciting game.
Standout rookie Tony Cortes had two singles and a long double to lead the Cat attack. Rookie Harold Jenkins also had a double in the Cougars' four-run sixth inning.
Filling in for the shorthanded Cougars, the indomitable Don Wixon had three singles and played an admirably solid third base, tallying three putouts and four assists, including a play at the plate. It's always great to play against Donny, and I can say it's even better playing beside him. Thanks again for your help, Don.
The Americans' Al Hart had to leave the game with an injury in the bottom of the sixth, and the Cougars wish one of the nicest guys in the CDMSBL a speedy recovery.
