Goose at HOF Induction 7/27/08

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon at the Cooperstown Induction, Goose Gossage was front and center with the most hall-of-famers ever assembled in the same place in the history of baseball. While it was nowhere near last year's induction of Cal Ripken, Jr. and Tony Gwynn (estimated 80,000), it was still magical seeing all those HOFs on one stage (approximately 60). Most of the morning was spent getting autographs on Main Street from the likes of Ron Guidry, Willie Mays, Frank Robinson, Juan Marichal, Ozzie Smith, and the always funny Shotgun Shuba (the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers' oldest living member). Autograph prices range anywhere from $50.00 to $150.00, with Willie Mays being the most expensive. But we're talking about the say hey kid and 150 bucks and a chance for a brief audience is well worth it. Willie has eye problems and doesn't let anyone take his picture, but most guys are happy to pose with their fans. Cooperstown is a thriving tourist attraction, but during the winter months it is a virtual ghost town. So once again, a baseball legend is enshrined into the hall forever. At the end of his speech, he talked about Thurman Munson being the best catcher to ever call a game and Bobby Murcer being the most beloved Yankee of all time. Thank you, Goose Gossage, for pitching some of the most exciting innings in the history of baseball.
