The Columbia-Greene Gray Cougars defeated the Hawks in 52+ action in Kinderhook on Tuesday by the score of 12 to 1 (five innings, 10 run rule).
Three Gray Cougars pitchers (Frank Montagano, Dave Plew, Rich Frank) combined to hold the Hawks to no earned runs on two hits.
Rob Rugen led the Gray Cougars attack with four hits (one of which was a double).
Read Shepherd, Dave Plew, and Jim Wing had two hits apiece for the senior Cats.
Tony Cortes, who somehow managed to play despite having received a cortisone shot just before game time in his scarred and ailing right knee, had a double and a stolen base and played right field. Bravo!
The immortal Don Wixon, with his usual fire-to-spare, caught the entire game for the Hawks and had a double. Joe McNally had a single.
The "Blonde Bomber," Susan Phillips, in typically stellar form, played the entire game in right field for the Hawks, where she demonstrated a strong and accurate throwing arm. She also slapped a crisp grounder to second that, alas, went 4-3. Well done, Susan.
Kevin Jackson was brisk, consistent, and judicious behind the plate, as always.
Sincerest thanks to manager Jim Brearton and the rest of the Hawks for an enjoyable game.
