If you can believe it.....after heavy rain all night Friday the Cubs-Highlanders 10:00 game on Saturday went on as scheduled at New Scotland. Can't say enough good things about Darrell Duncan and his crew. They are amazing and whatever we are paying for that field we should double it! Darrell had his guy on the field at 7:00 and by game time it was in perfect shape, lined and ready to go. This is at least the third time this year for my team alone that Darrell and his crew saved a game from being canceled due to his great dedication. What a great resource for our league! Thanks Darrell!!!
PS...why does New Scotland sit idle every Saturday after the Cubs' games? We should consider if possible scheduling two games there each Saturday next year for the 35 division. The field is outstanding and with Darrell and crew on the job it just makes sense for our division.
Like most divisions when the 35 division was started we had only a few teams and back then actually played with metal bats. We have grown and changed over the years and in my opinion can no longer mantain that this division is only a weeknight league. If each team would play only a couple of games (out of 20) on a Saturday that would greatly assist with our scheduling and rainout issues.
Just think......you can play a couple games on Saturdays on a freshly manicured field under blue skies and warm sun...able to play a full seven innings (or more) with no impending darkness and then able to enjoy a few cold ones on a warm summer day. (or if you prefer you can be home by lunchtime) I'll take that anyday over a rush-hour trip to Eastbumville to play on a field that hasn't been touched in weeks to maybe play seven innings with the last two in the dark.
I certainly don't mind scheduling a couple of weekend games to help with schedule flexibility. However, I have three small children at home and like any good parent, I actually enjoy spending time with my kids.
Most of the folks who play in the 35's are also in the 45's and 52's and don't have young kids at home. Of course they don't mind playing on weekends.
If the 35's schedules more than two or three weekend games per team, it no longer makes it worth my while to play and I get the sense that I wouldn't be the only one.
