The final game of the 35+ season decided the 4th through the 7th seeds in the playoffs and the batting title.
The first two innings went by without either team crossing the plate. The Hummnbirds scored three in the top of the third with singles by Earl Mitchell and Ron Coon, and a double by Billy Earl, and a little help from the Marlins defense. The Birds would push the lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth on a double by Williams and a RBI single by Ron Coon.
The Marlins would plate a single run in the bottom of the sixth on singles by Ryan Carmichael and John Reel, a hit batter, and a sacrafice fly by Mike Clary.
The Hummers closed out the scoring in the top of the 7th on the second double of the night by Williams, two walks and a wild pitch.
Billy Earl pitched superbly in the complete game win.
Now the batting title: Mike Girard enetered the game 30-57 and Ron Lochner 24-51. Ron had to take some pretty serious meds to even put his uniform on. Then he had to convince his manager to put him in the line-up. That wasn't easy because the risk of losing him for the playoffs was too great for the gain of winning a first round bye, but Ron was very persuasive. To make a long story short, Girard went 0-3 and Lochner went 3-3. That left Girard at 30-60 and Lochner at 27-54. That is .500 each and a share of the batting title. Way to go Ron!!! Now rest that back til Saturday!!!
Congrats to Mike and Ron for a share of the batting title. Mike maybe you will win the batting title on your own in the 45's. Your still hitting over 600 in that division.
