Roberto's Kids founder steve pindar and his sons will be at new scotland town park this sunday (8/16) to accept any used equipment you care to donate to his organization.
the collection, which is co-sponsored by CDMSBL, will run from 11 a.m. till 2 p.m. you'll see a sign at the entrance to the park.
the donations will go to poor kids in the dominican republic, puerto rico and nicaragua. the organization is also considering requests from U.S. native americans, from inner city programs in the U.S. and from africa. last year, Roberto's Kids which is named after Roberto Clemente and is associated with the Clemente Foundation sent two container ships of equipment, about 20,000 pounds, to kids in latin america and africa.
anything baseball related is welcome - from bags, bats (metal or wood), balls and gloves to shoes, clothing, training equipment. the only thing that's asked is that the equipment not be broken and that the clothing and shoes not have holes.
steve and lisa pindar, who are from oneonta and have been collecting equipment now for several years, are doing this work voluntarily, as part of a personal, non-denominational mission.
the couple collected about 750 pounds from CDMSBL players three years ago; already, i'd guess we've got about 150 pounds worth - donations guys have given me during the season that are stored in my garage - and we'd like to see if we can't hit 1,000 pounds this year.
if you can't make it but have something to give, perhaps you can get on line with your teammates and see if one of you is willing to make the trip and carry donations from several fellows?
if you do come, you can get a mild - but entertaining - baseball fix. there will be two games played that day at new scotland. i'm slated to play with the vets in the second game, at 2:30 vs. the A's. if you'd like to chat with me, i wear no. 44, have a white beard and far less hair on my head than i did even a year ago. c'est la vie.
i'd like to thank everyone who has already given. that's very kind of you. and i'm hoping others will take an hour or so to drive there and join in with the donations. some kids somewhere will be very glad you did.
if you'd like to check out Roberto's Kids on line, it's at: http://www.robertos-kids.org.
thanks to everyone in advance. hope to see you sunday.
