Donating to the Prostate Cancer Foundation as a League

As some of you know each year the CDMSBL donates 200 dollars to the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Steve Sigler and the other MSBL leagues around the U.S. have been donating to this foundation for years. I am taking it upon myself to try and raise more money than the 200 dollars that we have been previously donating each year. Each year Steve Sigler puts in the msbl magazine all the donations from all his leagues and our league happened to be way down at the bottom. I feel that we as a league can do a lot better then 200 dollars. With the money we raise as a league the cdmsbl board of directors will match up to 500 dollars.

How Common is Prostate Cancer?

It is the most common non-skin cancer in America, affecting 1 in 6 men. A non-smoking man is more likely to develop prostate cancer than he is to develop colon, bladder, and kidney cancers combined. In fact, a man is 35% more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer than a woman is to be diagnosed with breast cancer.

In 2009, more than 192,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and more than 27,000 men will die from the disease. One new case occurs every 2.7 minutes and a man dies from prostate cancer every 19 minutes.

It is estimated that there are more than 2 million American men currently living with prostate cancer.

A questioned thats been asked my manyAre some men more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer then others?

Older age me as well as African American race, and a family history of the disease can all increase the likelihood of a man being diagnosed with the disease.

As men increase in age, their risk of developing prostate cancer increases. Although only 1 in 10,000 under age 40 will be diagnosed, the rate shoots up to 1 in 39 for ages 40 to 59, and 1 in 14 for ages 60 to 69.

I will ask all teams and players to donate to the foundation. The team who can raise the biggest amount will get 2 free team bats as well as 300 dollars off your teams league fee in 2011. I will have each teams donation on the front page of the web site for all to see. I will collect the money on or around Fathers day which is June 20th. Good luck and I appreciate everyones help.

Thanks

Q - well put, but for the attention-deficit crowd:

Take a look at your teammates next game. Statistics say two of them will get this insidious monster. Q is asking you to give up just one double latte-chino mocha...yuk.

Tommy described it accurately: an insidious monster. I lost someone who had regular check-ups, including PSA blood work. One PSA was slightly elevated but the doctor said it was nothing to be concerned about because the PSA test is not very reliable. By the time it was obvious, it was too late-- and within a year, he was dead at 52.

Further research, using genes is underway. Money is needed to fund the research to stop this assassin. Please participate in this worthy effort.

Hi Quentin,
If you'd like to take the sponsorship roll a step further I have contacts that could help make an event out of this. Have you heard of the organization called "Pints for Prostates" ?
It's a fun way to raise money and create awareness to this disease.
Had a bout with PC myself last year and it really does affect your whole outlook on life.
Call me if you'd like to discuss.
