Veterans 5 Cyclones 4

Rick Koster had three hits, and Jon Atwell closed the door in relief, allowing no hits and striking out three over the last three innings, as the Vets came from behind to nip the Cyclones, 5-4 on Sunday in the Cyclones' inaugural game at Voorheesville Satellite Field. Vets picked up three in the first inning on an error, sacrifice bunt, and two base hits, a single by Koster and an opposite-field double by Dave Foreman. Cyclones countered with two in the bottom of the inning, on two walks, a groundout, and a base hit by catcher John Malone, and then picked up two more in the third on a sacrifice fly by Tommy Smith and another single by Malone. Vets then tied it in the 5th on a base hit by starting pitcher Billy Kirwan, and got one more in the top of the 7th to win it. Kirwan allowed just four hits in four innings of work, and Atwell came on to pick up the win in relief. Artie Gianakos scattered 10 hits and struck out 5 for the Cyclones. Dave Plew pitched well, but was tagged with the loss.

Great game to start the season. Both the Vets and Cyclones are going to be very tough teams to beat in the 45+ division, and our congratulations & best wishes to Brad and his guys.
