Yankees 4, WhizKids 2

The Yankees showed that they are still the team to beat in the 55+ division, defeating the WhizKids 4-2 Friday. Pete Westfall and Billy Kirvan held the Whiz to 3 hits, 2 of them coming in the 6th inning when the WhizKids took a short-lived 2-1 lead. Kirvan started the scoring with a leadoff single in the 2nd, and scored on a 2-out single by Wootson. The score stayed that way until the 6th, when John Healey led off with a walk, and Joe Torre followed with a single. After a strikeout, Ed Klopfer hit a run scoring double. Mike Lannon hit an RBI single to give the Whiz the temporary lead. Jim K., who pitched brilliantly for the Whiz, hit a ball that was deflected for a force at 2nd, and because of contact at the bag, it was called a double play. This prevented Klopfer from scoring, and ended the rally. Mike Eplite started the winning 6th for the Yankees with a single to center. Steve VanGelder then laced a double to left. After Kirvan popped out to Jim K. , Bob Noto, who went 3-3, tied the game with a single. Van Gelder was forced at home for the 2nd out, but Wootson then had his 2nd 2-out RBI single. Ray Demers scored the final run when the Whiz tried to prevent Wootson from taking 2nd after Noto had scored. Great game to be a part of. Congrats to Steve VanGelder and all of the Yankees. Jim,

Do you have some names for your roster? Also, any stats?

Thanks

Jim, Thanks for the kind words. You did a great job on the recap. It was a great game to play in. Great pitching on both teams. That is not to mention the great defense on both teams. I may be wrong, but I only remember 1 error in the game. I look forward to the rematch with you guys. You have put together a great bunch of guys.

Steve Van Gelder
