A typical Pirates/Hummingbirds contest (we tied 2-2 earlier in the season), with the Pirates coming away with a narrow victory. After five scoreless innings, the Pirates scored twice in the top of the sixth. The Hummingbirds (chiefly tropical New World birds of the family Trochilidae, but of course you knew that) answered with a run, started by a wicked shot to left by manager Jerry Hawkins. I believe that Jerry is 60 years old and, well, he's just impressive as hell. Anyway:
Mike Kane pitched a strong six innings for the Pirates, yielding to Todd Calhoun to close out the seventh. Todd struck out the side, but also walked two, just to keep the gathered throng from losing interest.
For the Hummingbirds, Jim LaTour started and pitched well. We took advantage of some walks, a couple of costly errors, and a wild pitch to do the bulk of our damage. Which was exactly how we planned it before the game; actual hits are so pedestrian.
For the Pirates, Mike Kane provided half of our offense with two singles, while Calhoun and Preller chipped in a hit each. BTW, Mike Kane also drove four of us there and back in his car. And paid for the gas! It was nice of him to bring us along, though I’m not convinced he needed the help.
