Pirates/Outlaws 8/12/10

Well I figure I've played somewhere around 1500 organized league baseball/softball games in my lifetime from around age 8 through high school, college, men's softball for 24 years and back to baseball in the last 10 with the 35's. Yeah I'm old. This playoff game completed last night was the craziest. The game was suspended Monday after 6 1/3 and was finished last night. I don't have the book, so this is from memory. The Pirates were leading 6-0 during the top of the 5th at Bob Moore as the weather went from a humid cloudy night to gale force winds beginning to blow along with light rain starting to fall. As the Outlaws batted in the bottom of 5 the rain picked up and so did their hitting. Some well placed hits with some sinking line drives skidding on the wet grass and a play where our 2nd baseman's routine throw to first went about 10 ft wide as there was no grip to be had on this slippery ball enabled them to get within 2. Lounello ripped a hit into the outfield with 2 outs scoring 2, tying the game, but was gunned out when he attempted to stretch it into a double. The game continued into the 6th and so did the wind driven rain. With 2 outs in the top of the 6th with men on 2nd and 3rd and the outfield in, Yakatan hit a soft liner over the 1st baseman's head to score the go ahead run, but that's all the Pirates would get as the next batter was retired. With weather getting worse, believe it or not, the bottom of the 6th started and the 1st Outlaw was retired. At that point the umps stopped the game and the mound and plate were covered but after a short delay the heavy rain continued to fall without the wind abating. As puddles were beginning to form the game was suspended at 6 1/3. Game 2 was played on Tuesday with the Outlaws going ahead in late innings to win a close game. So now we return to game 1 playing it at Rogowitcz on Thursday night with the Pirates leading by 1 and the Outlaws batting with 1 out. The 1st two Outlaws reach base and a screaming sinking line drive is hit to center field and Mike Burns dives and makes an amazing catch and lobs it to 2nd to double up the runner ending the 6th. The Pirates come to bat in the 7th and with 2 outs and runners at 1st and 3rd and the Pirates pitcher Callahan, hits a long fly ball over the left fielder's head that appears to be a HR, hits the top of the fence scoring the runner from 3rd, and the runner on 1st heads for home and is gunned down by a one hop throw by the cutoff man to the catcher Llera who puts down the tag. The Outlaws are batting in the bottom of the 7th with bases loaded and 2 outs and down 2 when a high pop is hit to shallow left field and as the ball is drifting, the shortstop calls for it while back peddling and loses his balance as it his his glove and drops the ball scoring 2 to tie the game. With the dangerous Mario Arduini, who seems to get a hit every time he comes to bat, comes to the plate, the Pirates intentionally walk him to load the bases. It backfires, as the next hitter hits a clean single through the middle to win the game and series for the Outlaws. Heartbreaking loss for the Pirates and great win for the Outlaws who never gave up in a game down by 6 and again down in the resumed play by 2 with 2 out in the 7th.

Tough luck Bob, but congratulations to you and a great group of guys on a great season. Your team has a bright future if you can keep that squad together. Have a happy and healthy offseason and good luck in 2011.
