I agree that we should consider tinkering with next year's All-Star game/s, since it seems to have lost some steam. I believe that last year's home run derby was a success, though I don't know about overall attendance.

Scott Card once proposed turning it into more of a family day, renting out an "Action Bounce" for the kids, and whatnot. Another idea is to hold it during the season, rather than after many of us have turned the page, so to speak.

Just throwing out ideas, not advocating, mind you.

One thought that John Reel mentioned to me about a year ago was to have a blowout BEFORE the season started. Sort of rent out a Knights of Columbus type hall, come up with a door fee, and invite all of us to come together and get hammered. You know, fostering togetherness and conviviality and all that -- before the season starts and we go at each other tooth and nail. This time of year it's hard to actually like each other (frankly), but come Spring we're "Brothers in Baseball" once again. For a couple of weeks, anyway.

Quite a few years ago, we used to have a big blow out at a restaurant before the season started. We even had a DJ and the cost was nominal. It was NOT supported by the players. Seems most guys only want to come to the games and that's it. And that's OK if that's all they want...
