Billy Smith allowed only 2 singles over 5 innings to lead the WhizKids to an 8-5 victory over the Cougars on May 25th. Smith struck out 2, "hit" 1 batter (Tony Scanu's XXL shirt was grazed!), and didn't issue any walks. The WhizKids scored single runs in the 1st and 2nd, before scoring 4 runs in the 4th on 5 consecutive hits, the last 3 being RBI doubles by Jeff Teats, Don Dennis, and Mike Lannon. The Cougars didn't give up, scoring 2 in the 6th off Joe Torre (Oh, those bases on balls!), and 2 more in the 7th, courtesy of 2 errors by yours truly. For the game, every WhizKid hit safely, with Dennis, Lannon, Torre, and Ed Draves having multiple hits. Dennis also had 3 RBI's, and scored 2 runs. For the Cougars, runs were scored by Al Hart (1), and 2 each by ? Farell, and Rich Frank. Good weather, good game, good sportsmanship! Jim Porter-WhizKids
That's Cougars center-fielder Jim Farrell, who was playing with a sprained ankle, while still managing to make some fine catches.
Congrats to Jim Porter and all of my friends on the Whiz Kids--and especially to his latest "secret weapon" catching standout turned ace pitcher Billy Smith, who was hitting his spots with maddening consisitency.
Actually, I knew the Cougars were in trouble when I noticed my kids were spending more time on Porter's bench than on mine! You've got to stop bringing those buckets of bubble gum, there, Jimbo!
