NOLAN PROPANE CARDINALS DEFEAT DAMN YANKEES

The Nolan Propane Cardinals survived a possible upset in the 7th inning and held on to beat the Damn Yankees, 5-4, on Thursday at New Scotland, for their 5th win of the season.

Jimmy LaTorre picked up the win for the Cardinals, going six LaTorre-strong innings, and allowing just one run on three hits. Yankees started the scoring in the first with a double, a walk, an error, and a ground ball to short. The Cardinals evened things up in the bottom of the inning on a walk to Mark Josefski, a stolen base, and hits by Skippy Lyons and Rodney Dunbar.

The Cardinals got two more in the 3rd when Dave Plew was hit by a pitch, stole second, and came home on a perfectly-placed base hit to right field by Josefski. Paul Watson, who had also singled, came home on a ground-out to make it 3-1. In the next inning, Yankees Mike Hart sailed one to the fence for a double, a solid hit admired by both sides. Bravo Mike! But, thats enough of that!

The Cardinals appeared to put it away with two more in the bottom of the 6th on three consecutive two-out doubles by Lyons, Jerry Hawkins, and Dunbar. But, it was not to be all that easy.

With two outs and a runner on second in the top of the 7th, Steve Van Gelder hit a bounding bullet to Dave Plew at second. Plew, who played a flawless second base all evening, swiped up that ball and made a beautifully controlled side arm toss to first for what should have been the third out. To everyones surprise, including the Cards excellent first baseman, a fluke error occurred and one run scored. The next two batters doubled, bringing the Yankees to within one run, but Jerry Solomon, on in relief of Jim LaTorre, reached back for something extra and struck out the Yankees batter to preserve the win.

It was an exciting game and should be in the running for the Game of the Week!

Cardinals go again on Friday, the 17th, against the undefeated Americans at New Scotland.
