Giants post wins over the Dodgers and Cyclones in a 45 Division DH Sunday at Voorheesville High School.
In the opener, Bill Smith, making his first-ever start in the 45 Division, pitched a complete-game 2-hitter in beating the Dodgers, 12-2. He was backed by the Giants ' 12-hiit attack. Doug Reisinger led the hit parade with three hits, which included two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs. Steve Lounello, Mike Lannon and Jim Konstantakis each added two hits with JK scoring 3 times, Lannon scoring twice and Lounello driving in three.
Smith walked three and struck out one. Bill never faced more than four batters in any one inning. Ed Obertubessing's first-inning RBI single and John Corrigan's booming triple in the 4th were the lone Dodger hits. Billy kept the Dodgers off balance all day, inducing 10 infield ground outs, five fly outs and two infield pop-ups. Of Bill's three walks, two came in the 5th inning, But the Giants turned a nifty 5-4-3 double play to end the threat.
In the nightcap, the Giants pounded out 15 hits to back the pitching of JimK and Tony Nardacci in the Giants 12-1 win. JK, who K'd three and walked none, scattered five hits over five innings before Tony came on and pitched two perfect innings of relief.
Tony and Doug led the Giants. Tony had three hits, which included two doubles and three runs scored. Doug laced two doubles and a single and scored twice. Mike Kane smacked a double and triple, scored a run and drove in two, Wayne Phillips added two RBIs with a pair of hits and Jim Porter perhaps had the biggest blow for the Giants when he blasted a bases-clearing double to deep left to cap an 8-run third inning and give the Giants 9-1 lead.
Giants are now 10-4 in the hotly contested race for 2nd seed behind the once-beaten Marlins. Giants face the Vets this Sunday and close with the perennial power Reds in the regular-season finale Aug. 28 at New Scotland.
