The 2020 debut of the Matinee Division at Central Park A Diamond went off today without a hitch. 22-strong attended the late morning game, with a nine-inning barn-burner that ended in the bottom of the ninth with a walk-off bases loaded line drive single to left by Dave Mitchell. We had all we could do to keep the fans from storming the field.
It's the closest thing to my memories of sandlot ball as a kid that I can remember. Calling up friends on the phone is replaced by e-mail, strapping my glove and bat to the handlebars of my stingray bike is replaced by throwing everything into the back of the car. But what hasn't changed is it's still friends re-uniting from all over to play a game we love.
A big thank you to Jim McQ and Jim K for making their weekday afternoon baseball brainstorm a reality.
Any day, with a game of baseball in it, is a good day.
