McQuade delivers walk-off win for McCubs

With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Jim McQuade scorched a high two-strike Greg Witalec fastball down the left field line to deliver a 4-3 walk-off win for the Cubbies over the Yankees in 45s action on Sunday evening at Clifton Commons Park.

Bob Poulin went the distance for the unbeaten Cubs (3-0) with overpowering stuff, and just enough wildness to keep any Yankees hitters from digging in too deep. Yanks gave starter Mark Marshall a 1-0 lead, but Cubs got two back in the bottom of the first. Witalec took over in the second and allowed just one Cubs run over the next six innings with his own supply of gas and a tight breaking ball. The Yankees rallied for a pair of runs in the sixth to tie the game and set the stage for McQuade's heroics.

Shortstops Ron Massaroni (Cubs) and Carlos Espada (Yanks) each made sparkling backhand plays in the hole, and Cubs 3B Ron Lochner snuffed a late Yanks rally with a diving, forward roll and flip to second base to get an inning-ending force out at second. The judges on hand scored it a 9.9 out of 10 with a slight deduction for the landing.

There was a rare Sunday Mike Girard sighting in the lineup for the Cubs, and a workhorse effort was tuned in by Mash Gadomski behind the plate. And if there is ever a question about how much Tony Parella likes to hit, consider the fact that he took a Poulin fastball off the left arm and tried to convince the ump that it hit his bat. Of course, the sound of the ball hitting his sequoia arm was about the same.

If any details are slightly off, it is because the scorebook went home with the guy who got the game-winning hit.
