Snatching a Moral Victory from the Jaws of Defeat

The Dodgers and Peppers squared off at the A Diamond as the second half of the 55+ season begins. The Dodgers had mercied the Peppers in their opening game. The Peppers showed up looking for redemption. From the 1st inning it looked like the red team would walk away with a victory. Dave Plew set the visitors down in order in the top of the first. Peppers lead-off batter placed a pop fly into the Bermuda triangle between the mound, second base and every other Dodger defender. Then, Dodger manager/catcher/genius(?) moved his right fielder "in a few steps" and Brad Maione promptly crushed a double over the right fielder's head. 1 - 0 Peppers.

The Peppers' defenders had obviously studied their scouting reports as they were positioned in front of every line drive, hard grounder and fly ball the Dodgers could muster. I don't have the book so I will just say that the Peppers hit the ball well and took advantage of their scoring opportunities to build a 6 - 1 lead. Then Lady Luck shined on the Dodgers. In the top of the 6th, Mike Kocienski singled, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch then scored on a passed ball. Mark Denicola led off the Dodgers' 7th reaching on a HBP. Cue the circus music. Error. Error. Base hit. Error. Passed Ball. Error. Wild Pitch. The Dodgers score four times to tie the score at 6 - 6.

With one out in the bottom of the 7th Ted Whitting singles. The next Pepper bloops one to CF. As Dodger center fielder, Denicola calls "I got it" and decoys the catch, Whitting has to play it safe and stays near first base. Denicola catches the ball on one bounce. Cue the circus music. Denicola's 20 foot throw to 2B hits our second baseman in the nuts and ricochets to the shortstop. Whitting considers running to second. The shortstop's underhand throw goes between the second baseman's legs. Whitting starts jogging to second. Dodger pitcher, Jimmy T, alertly backs up the overthrow and tosses it back to our second baseman (his name escapes me) and he misses it again. Whitting is safe at second. Peppers on 1st and 2nd with one out and Destiny is staring us in the face.

Fortunately, Jimmy T gets a strike out and a ground out to end the inning. Darkness prevails and both teams leave with a tie. None of my sisters were available for kissing so I went up on the Central Park frisbee golf course where some Schenectady residents were smoking marijuana and we talked about the meaning of life.
