PIRATES 6 AMERICANS 4

On a night that started with a steady drizzle and threat of and early darkness, the Americans squared off for the second time this season. The first match up resulted in an 11-11 tie game. Bill Farrell was determined that it wouldn't happen again. Americans broke on top in the 1st on singles by Labarge and Travis, and a Pirates error. Pirates plated 2 in bottom of the 1st, with wheels of Jim Jaziewicz, and error, and ribbies from Jim Ansel and EJ Seney. to go up 2-1. After that, Ed Rogers twirling for the Americans settled in and kept Pirates off balance with change of speeds and a good Uncle Charlie, with 3 scoreless frames, and escaping a 4th inning jam. Americans looked to break it open in the 3rd with consecutive singles by Aiello, Braverman and LaBarge for 1-run, and Gibby T again doing damage with a crushed 2-bagger into the left field corner. An error, accounted for 2 of the 3 scored being unearned, and from there, Farrell refused to lose and slammed the door, setting down 7 in a row, before a Leuning base hit, and then getting two 1-3 comebackers. The Buccos got to swashbuckling in the 5th, and started to solve Rogers. A Dana Hansen single got it started. Kevin MacCauley "legged out" a misplayed ball, and then Jim Denny hit a shot to deep left for a two bagger, plating PR Cos DeBari, to close to 4-3. With runners at 2nd and 3rd, Jazzy continued a big night, with a smash over the LF's head, for a stand-up triple and 2 big ribeye steaks, and a 5-4 lead. After a Newcomb walk, newcomer Paul Peters, who played a great shortstop, got the bingle to bring Jazzy home, and a 6-4 lead. Neither team could muster a rally in the 6th, and now it was up to Farrell, with closer Jack Brock at the ready. A 7th inning lead-off walk to Mike Aiello, Billy F.'s only free pass of the night, gave Manager Dalton a case of Earl Weaver-itis. Farrell buckled down and induced a 6-4-3 DP in the waning light. A Mike Labarge single (his 3rd hit of the game), gave the Americans a life, before a 6-4 force ended a well played game by both teams.

Farrell CG 7 IP 4 R 1 ER 9 H 1 BB 2 K and two timely pickoffs.
Peters was stellar at 3rd and short recording 9 assists and 2 put-outs, and a great over the shoulder grab on a Rogers duck-snort into short left in the 4th
Jimmy Jazz 4-4 2 R 2 RBI ansd 3 SB and his hi-lite Triple
Jim Denny 1-3 with his rbi double

Ed Rogers went the distance for the Americans scattering 8 hits.
Mike Labarge and Jesse Braverman led the Americans with 3 hits and 2 R, and 2 hits and a R respectively.

Next up for the Pirates is a chilly Saturday morning tilt with the Peppers, while the Americans are off until Friday when they too see the Dave Plew Crew.

Pirates continue to love the game, and no one and nothing is sacred in the bench jockeying, and every Pirate is a target at some point or another. Win or lose (which we have had our share of...) if we're not raucous and laughing, something is wrong! Our role guys readily step up and stay in the game. New additions and return of injured guys are very welcomed and make a big difference.

Long-time CDMSBL'er Don Dunham umpired the game last night, and it was the best performance see this season - very consistent and always in position - great job DD!
