What the Buc?

You will have to forgive the Dodgers for thinking that we were sailing into another double-digit victory over the Pirates but Captain Dalton and his swashbucklers had different ideas. Billy "Grey Beard" Farrell took the mound for the Buco's and matched zeros for three innings with Dodgers' starter, Mark Denicola.

The Dodgers somehow got on the board in the fourth when Jim Bradley singled to center with one out. Farrell then had Bradley leaning and his pickoff throw to first sent our clean-up hitter scrambling down the plank towards second base. Fortunately for the artful Dodgers, the throw from first was off-line and Bradley slid in safe. A swinging bunt advanced Bradley to 3rd. Steve Schaefer drove in the run with a solid single to left field.

Jimmy Tesoreiro took the mound for the Dodgers and faced just seven Pirates in two innings of work. The Dodgers thought for sure we would have a comfortable lead by the end of five innings. The Pirates defense would surrender no gold. Their infielders made plays. Their outfielders ran down deep fly balls. And Mr. Farrell threw a bases-loaded K to squash a Dodgers' rally. Argh!

Mark Denicola led off the bottom of the 6th with a triple to right field and he was quickly brought home on a sac-fly from Bradley. Jimmy T then thundered a double to the left-center warning track. Yours truly then boomed a single over the second baseman and it looked like the Dodgers would finally put up a crooked number. But those Pirates would pillage another rally with the old catcher-to-shortstop-to-3B pickoff and the Dodgers were left to protect a two-run lead.

Denicola - who had returned to the mound in the top of the 6th shut down the Bucs one last time and the Dodgers drew a gigantic sigh of relief. Congratulations to JD and his crew for a great game.

The Dodgers will spend the day digging out our thermals for an 8:30 PM game on Thursday against the Twins.
