Damn Yankees advance

The Damn Yankees punched their ticket to the championship series in the 55s division with a 9-1 victory over the Dodgers at Cook Park on Saturday afternoon.

For Donnie Ball's 5th-seeded Dodgers, it ended an exciting week of tournament baseball that saw them knock off the Pirates earlier in the week, and the No. 4 Twins Friday evening. With just over 12 hours to regroup, the Dodgers simply ran out of the fuel needed to get to the finish line.

John Weber limited the tired Dodger bats to just four hits in pitching five shutout innings, before giving way to Darrell Duncan and Craig Miller for the final two frames. Duncan led the Yanks at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance, including 3 RBI. His two-run double off starter Mark Denicola with two outs in the bottom of the first helped stake the Yankees to a 3-0 lead, and his hits in the middle innings helped ignite a run in the fourth and four more in the fifth. Jack Griffin added a pair of hits, RBI and stolen bases and Paul Post scored a pair of runs from his leadoff position.

Jim Bradley had a single and double, and Rick Loffredo added a pair of hits to lead the Dodgers, who finish with a 9-9-1 overall record on the season.

The Damn Yankees will put their 15-1-1 record up against the defending champion Cubs next week in a best of 3 series. The Yankees won the first meeting 7-2, and in the rematch rallied in the bottom of the seventh to tie the Cubs at 7-7 in a game that ended that way due to darkness.

For nearly every team in the 55s division to be able to say they played 16-plus games this summer is extraordinary. To have the No. 6 Angels and No. 5 Dodgers make it to the semifinals speaks to the competitiveness of the league.

A big thank you to 55s president John Reel for continuing to be a guiding force and a calming presence as we navigated through these rough COVID waters all summer and fall to get an opportunity to play the game we love.

The Yankees are a solid bunch and they left no doubt why they were the regular season champions. It will be an interesting and competitive tournament finals against the Cubs.

The Dodgers were happy to make it to the final four with a hard fought win against the Pirates and a convincing victory over the Twins. Our goal moving forward is to consistently compete against the top teams in the division. We will heal up from some injuries, rest our muscles and see how the free agency market looks for 2021.

I would like to thank you, Tim Brown for creating, recreating and adjusting the season schedule. John Reel the commissioner and league president and the entire board of directors for guiding us through this crazy season. I would also like to congratulate everyone in the CDMSBL for adhering to COVID-19 protocols and for maintaining a safe playing environment. To my knowledge, nobody in our league contracted the virus as a result of playing baseball. That is a tremendous show of respect for each other. Hopefully, we can take the masks off in 2021 and smile at each other again!

Stay healthy everyone!

I would also like to thank both John and Tim for the remarkable job of putting this full season together..16 regular season games and a full playoff schedule during this crazy year is incredible!

I would also like to suggest we use this experience next year when we formulate the 2021 season plan. As we were forced to do this year, perhaps we can again extend the 55 season beyond what has been the norm and take advantage of the wonderful baseball weather in September and even early October. Perhaps as we did this year we can also play some games on Saturdays, adjust our start times earlier as the season progresses, and use as much of the short Northeast baseball season as we can.

Good Luck to the Yankees and Cubs!
